Moonflower: On Art & the Self

I believe art is the self, manifested as a shard of mirror the artist holds to the world. It offers a glimpse of who they are, while reflecting back to onlookers — to society — what the individual sees, what they feel, and how they yearn to be seen—actually seen.

I loved to watch cartoons growing up

Though I never much cared for art

Though I was not raised in a creative home

My sorrow, the flightless artist; I, the bird who ran

Perhaps had I been borne here, I'd have the courage

How I'm able to summon a commanding voice

To speak with unshakeable conviction, wishing I was

Amidst shrouds of unworthiness looming loudly

Enough to find my self aimless in familiar places

Certain, for once, to stand and just stand, to sit and just sit.

...a mirror by itself still reflects...
